What is Qigong?
Qigong is an ancient practice for modern wellbeing.
Qi means energy.
Gong means to be skillful with.
So Qigong is really the practice of being skillful with our energy.
By energy we mean the energy we take into our day everyday.
We tend to have more of it at the beginning of our day, and less of it by the end.
We have a higher quality of energy, or a lower quality of energy. Think, working joyfully with lots of motivation and excitement, or working hard to meet a deadline stressed out and frustrated.
We can have lots of energy, or little, and it can be energy that of higher or lower quality.
Qigong practice is designed to help us clear away stress, return to balance and wash away emotional and physical tension so we can show up each day feeling our best.
A solid well balanced Qigong routine includes:
MindfulnessBreathing Exercises
Warm ups
Stretches
Self Massage
Relaxation and flow
Energetic tonification and circulation
Consistent Qigong practice helps us build what is called mindbody fitness. This is the type of fitness that looks like:
- Having a calm, grounded quality to our emotions, thoughts and inner sensations
- Increased Resilience to the stresses of life
- Being mobile, flexible, strong and connected to our body
- Being able to move our body in a variety of ways
- Increased awareness of inner sensations such as energetic movement, emotions, aches and pains
- Increased mindfulness
- Feeling good in mind, body and soul
The best way in my opinion to experience Qigong is simply to try it yourself. Follow along with this short Qigong routine for beginners here.
